MSU announces 2009 recruiting class
Stellar group of freshmen comes with national
credentials
EAST LANSING, 7/16/09 - Michigan State University head wrestling coach
Tom Minkel has announced his 2009 recruiting class. The features
some of the Michigan's best high school wrestlers as well as one of the
most successful wrestlers in Indiana high school history. "This
group of young men will undoubtedly make an impact here at MSU both on
the mat and in the class room" said Coach Minkel. "It's a terrific
class".
Dan Osterman – St. Johns, MI
A four-time finalist and three-time Michigan High School State Champion,
Dan Osterman competed at Carson City High School his freshman through
junior years before transferring to St. Johns for his senior year. Dan
broke on to the national stage when he finished third at the Asics
Folkstyle National Championships in 2008. Dan will wrestle at 133 or 141
lbs. for MSU.
Josh Harper – Mishawaka, IN
Josh Harper was a stellar high school wrestler winning three Indiana
High School State Championships and amassing an remarkable 175-2 career
record. He likely would have won a fourth state title were it not for a
serious should injury his senior year. Josh is projected to wrestle at
133 lbs. for Michigan State.
Michael McClure – West Ottawa, MI
As a senior, heavyweight Mike McClure posted a 55-0 record on his way to
winning the Division 1 Michigan High School State Championship after
placing third as a junior. McClure then went on to success on the
national stage finishing second at the High School National
Championships. McClure joins a list of former West Ottawa wrestlers who
have competed for the Spartans along with Karl and Spencer Nadolsky.
McClure brings great physical strength with a 420-pound bench press and
a 530-pound leg squat.
Brenan Lyon – Ithaca, MI
After finishing runner-up in the State Championships as a junior, Brenan
Lyon won the Michigan High School State Championship this year and
posted a perfect 57-0 season record. Brenan then went on to win the High
School National Championship beating wrestlers in his weight class from
Connecticut, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Ohio. He is currently ranked
sixth nationally in his weight class. Brenan is projected to wrestle for
the Spartans at 125 lbs.
Nick Kaczanowski – Rochester, MI
Nick Kaczanowski is a two-time Michigan High School State Placer
finishing sixth as a sophomore and second as a junior at 152 lbs. Nick
was unable to compete at the State Championships his senior year due to
a serious illness at the end of the season. However, Nick finished his
career with a record of 189-22 with 130 falls. Nick is projected to
wrestle at 157 or 165 lbs. for MSU.
Zach Crim – Haslett, MI
Zach Crim is a three-time Michigan High School State Placer, finishing
seventh, fourth, and third at the State Championships. Zach is projected
to wrestle at 125 or 133 lbs. for Michigan State.
