Wrestling signs a stellar recruiting class
Coach Minkel inks six to National Letters of Intent
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State wrestling coach Tom Minkel
announced today the signing of six student-athletes to National Letters
of Intent. Sean McMurray (Portage, Ind.), Kamron Jackson (Southaven,
Mich.), Nick McDiarmid (Hartland, Mich.), Nick Proctor (Neuqua Valley,
Ill.), John Rizqallah (Allegan, Mich.), and Nick Humes
(Stevensville-Lakeshore, Mich.), and will all join the Spartans for the
2010-11 season.
"I really think this is an extraordinary group of young men," said
Minkel. "They have had great success in high school and they are, to a
man, a great fit here. I'm looking forward to having them as Spartans."
Sean McMurray won back-to-back Indiana state championships in 2007 and
2008 at 135 and 152 pounds for coach Pat Wilkins at Portage High School.
He placed seventh in the state tournament as a freshman. He was also a
2008 Cadet Freestyle All-American. He is projected to wrestle at 157
pounds for MSU.
Kamron Jackson comes to MSU after two seasons at North Idaho College
where he took third place at the Junior College Nationals at 184 pounds
in 2009. He was a back-to-back Michigan state high school champion in
2007 and 2008 for coach Tim Simpson at South Haven High School. Jackson
is expected to wrestle at 184 pounds for MSU.
Nick McDiarmid claimed the 2009 Michigan state high school championship
at 215 pounds, wrestling at Fowlerville High School. McDiarmid, who now
attends Heartland High School, also took second at the 2009 Pre-Season
National High School Championships. In 2008 McDiarmid was the high
school state runner-up and was also a Cadet Greco All-America selection.
He is projected to compete at 197 pounds for the Green and White.
Nick Proctor was the 2009 Illinois state runner-up at 160 pounds at
Neuqua Valley High School for coach Mick Ruettiger. He was a 2009 Junior
Freestyle All-American as well as a Cadet Freestyle All-American in
2008. He is projected to wrestle at 165 for the Spartans.
John Rizqallah, whose brother Joe is currently wrestles for MSU, was the
2009 Michigan state runner-up at 171 pounds. He was the 2009 Pre-Season
National High School Champion at 189 pounds. This past week, Rizqallah
finished second at the MSU Open in 184-pound freshman/sophomore division
after taking third in the event last season. Rizqallah is projected to
wrestle at 184 pounds for MSU.
Nick Humes was the 2009 Michigan state runner-up at 140 pounds for coach
Bruce Bittenbender at Lakeshore High School. In 2007 and 2008 he
wrestled his way to a pair of third-place finishes at the state
championships. He is projected to wrestle at either 149 or 157 pounds
for the Spartans.
