CEAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team improved to
6-1-1 on the season after going 2-0-1 on Saturday (Jan. 16) in the
inaugural Spartan Duals at Jenison Field House. Michigan State defeated
Stanford in round one, 25-10, tied Rutgers in round two, 16-16, and
ended the day by downing Northern Illinois, 28-6.
Leading the way for the Spartans on Saturday were No. 1 Franklin Gomez
at 133 pounds, No. 13 David Cheza at 149 pounds and Tyler Dickenson at
197 pounds as all went 3-0 on the day.
In round one against Stanford, Gomez got a major decision over Justin
Paulsen to tie the score at four as MSU went on to win six of the next
eight matches en route to a 25-10 win. The Spartans took control of the
dual in the 157-pound match as Anthony Jones Jr. pined Mike Kent at 5:27
to give MSU a commanding 16-4 advantage.
The Spartans got their toughest test of the day in round two against
Rutgers. With Rutgers leading 7-3 entering the 149-pound bout, the
Spartans got a major decision from David Cheza (15-3) to the knot the
score at seven. Jones then fell in a tough-fought battle at 157 pounds,
2-0, to Daryl Cocozzo before Kyle Bounds retied the score at 10 for MSU
with 5-2 win over Greg Zannetti at 165 pounds. The seesaw battle
continued at 174 as Ian Hinton dropped his only dual of the day to give
Rutgers back the lead, 13-0.
The Green and White then picked up consecutive wins at 184 pounds as
Nick Palmieri defeated Dan Siedenberg, 3-2, and Dickenson scored a 2-1
upset-win over No. 19 Lamar Brown, giving MSU its first lead of the
match, 16-13, with one match to go. The Scarlet Knights' ninth-ranked DJ
Russo gave the Spartans' Alan O'Donnell his only loss of the afternoon,
6-3, in the heavyweight bout to end the dual in a 16-16 tie.
In the final round of the day, MSU took eight of 10 matches from
Northern Illinois and never trailed en route to 28-6 win. Curran Jacobs
picked up his first dual-match victory of the season as he got an 11-4
decision over Zach Benzio at 184 pounds.
Michigan State will return to action next weekend for a pair of Big Ten
dual meets at Jenison Field House. The Spartans will host Minnesota at 7
p.m. on Friday and Illinois on Sunday at 1 p.m.
