Wrestling falls at No. 1 Iowa
Gomez's 29-match winning streak snapped in the loss.
IOWA CITY, Iowa, 1/31/10 - The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling
team blanked its sixth opponent of the 2009-10 season Sunday night,
beating Michigan State, 37-0, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. The
Spartans, after defeating Michigan on Friday night, are now 7-4-1 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten. Iowa
improved 18-0 and 4-0 in the conference.
Top-ranked Franklin Gomez suffered his first loss since last season for
MSU, ending his 29-match winning streak, when he fell to the Hawkeye's
sixth-ranked Daniel Dennis in overtime at 133 pounds. The two went into
overtime tied at two where Dennis was able to get an escape for a 3-2
win.
In another hard fought battle, Spartan Anthony Jones Jr. (157 pounds)
fell 1-0 to Iowa's Aaron Janssen. Janssen got an escape seven seconds
into the third period and hung on for the win.
Spartan redshirt sophomore David Cheza, who entered Sunday's dual with a
seven-bout winning streak and ranked 13th in the nation, fell to No.
1-ranked Brent Metcalf at 149 pounds.
MSU will get back into action on Friday, Feb. 5 for a 7:30 p.m. dual at
Central Michigan.
