No. 3 Ohio State downs Spartans

Wrestlers will close out the regular season at home on Feb. 21.

COLUMBUS, Ohio, 2/14/10 - The Michigan State wrestling team fell to third-ranked Ohio State, 30-7, on Sunday (Feb. 14) afternoon in Columbus, Ohio. The Spartans are now 8-7-1 and 2-5 in the Big Ten while OSU upped its record to 18-1 and remained undefeated in the conference at 7-0.

"Today was disappointing," said MSU head coach Tom Minkel. "I didn't feel we wrestled to our potential and we're a better team than what we showed today."

The Spartans' Franklin Gomez improved to 19-1 when he got his seventh major decision of the year - defeating OSU's Ian Paddock, 14-2, at 133 pounds. The fourth-ranked Gomez got two first-period takedowns and then a reversal and two more near fall points in the second. Gomez picked up three more near fall points, a takedown and then added another point with a 3:32 riding-time advantage for the victory.

Dan Osterman gave MSU its other win of the day as he defeated Pat Harrington, 7-2, at 141 pounds. After a Harrington takedown early in the first, Osterman fought back with an escape and a takedown to claim a 3-2 lead heading into the second. Osterman got another escape and takedown in the third and added another point with a 2:38 advantage in riding time.

Ian Hinton came close to upsetting No. 11 Dave Rella at 174 pounds, but Rella claimed a 3-1 overtime win. The two went into OT tied at one where Rella then won with a takedown.

"Franklin wrestled particularly well and Ian Hinton, even though he lost, was on the offensive most of the match," Minkel said.

The Spartans will host Indiana in their final dual of the season at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 21).
