Gomez Named to NWCA All-Academic Team
All-American earns garners honor for second consecutive year
EAST LANSING, Mich., 5/06/10 - For the second consecutive year, wrestler Franklin Gomez has been named to the NWCA All-Academic Team. A three-time All-American, Gomez placed third at the NCAA Championships this past season. He carries a 3.2 GPA and will graduate this weekend with a degree in human resources.

"Franklin has been the consummate student-athlete here at Michigan State," said MSU head coach Tom Minkel. "He's been an NCAA Champion, he's involved in his church and he's an honor student. We're enormously proud of him and the way he has represented Michigan State."

To qualify for the All-Academic team, a wrestler must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, and either been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule - and must have competed in at least 60 percent of said schedule. The other way to qualify for the All-Academic team is to have a 3.0 GPA and been an NCAA All-American.

As a team, Michigan State earned a spot on the NWCA All-Academic Top 30 teams list. The Spartans ranked 26th on the list, fourth among Big Ten schools.

In all, 74 individuals representing 45 schools are being honored on this year's All-Academic Team.
