EAST LANSING, Mich. – Steve Andrus (Manhattan, Kan.) of the Michigan
State wrestling team has qualified for the 2010 FILA Junior World
Championships as a member of team USA after capturing the 120 kg/264.5
lbs crown at both the FILA Junior Greco-Roman National Championships and
FILA Greco-Roman World Team Trials. Andrus will travel to the Olympic
Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he will begin training
for the FILA Junior World Championships to be held in Budapest, Hungary
July 20-25.
“The spot I am at right now is high up,” said Andrus. “By starting at
the bottom I have had to work my up to where I am now. It’s great to see
that all of my hard work is paying off, and that I am able to represent
the U.S.A. at the FILA Junior World Championships in Budapest at the end
of July. I certainly hope to learn a lot throughout this process and
improve my wrestling. Every time I go to these types of competitions I
try to expand my horizons. With this being my first time out of the
country, it will be nice to take in the whole culture change that will
come along with this competition.
The rising junior started his journey at the FILA Junior Greco-Roman
National Championships when he defeated Ben Apland of Michigan, 2-0
(5-0, 2-0), on April 25th.
Against Toby Erickson of Boise State, Andrus posted a 2-0 (3-0, 1-0) win
in the finals of the Greco-Roman World Team Trials on May 29th to claim
his second tournament win.
