Nick Simmons finishes fifth at U.S. Olympic Team Trials
5/22/04 - Nick Simmons won two of three matches in the consolation bracket Saturday to finish fifth at the Olympic Trials at the 55 kg. weight class.  Nick was one of only a few wrestlers with college eligibility remaining to place at the Olympic Trials.

Simmons, Lossen, and Wechter compete in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials  5/21/04 - Nick Simmons won two of his first three matches in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials today in Indianapolis to lead the Spartan contingent of Olympic hopefuls.  Sophomore heavyweight Max Lossen lost both of his matches and was eliminated from contention.  Former Spartan John Wechter went 1-1 and is still alive in the competition.

Nick Simmons wins the gold medal at the Pam American Championships  5/9/04 - Guatemala City, Guatemala - U.S. wrestlers captured 18 medals overall at the Pan American Championships, which concluded on Friday evening.  Four wrestlers, Nick Simmons (Williamston, Mich./Michigan WC), Sara Fulp-Allen (El Granada, Calif./Menlo College), Alaina Berube (Escanaba, Mich./New York AC) and Stephany Lee (Honolulu, Hawaii/Missouri Valley) won gold medals.  Simmons was the only men’s freestyle wrestler to win gold, taking the title at 55 kg/121 lbs.

McKnight, Keenan, and Nadolsky named to the Big Ten Academic All-Conference Team  5/3/04 - Park Ridge, IL -- As the winter term of the 2003-04 school year comes to a close, the Big Ten recognizes a total of 409 winter sports student-athletes who have been named to the Academic All-Conference Team. The list of honored student-athletes features 28 men’s and 47 women’s basketball players, 30 men’s and 49 women’s gymnasts, 83 men’s and 125 women’s swimmers and divers and 47 wrestlers.  MSU wrestlers Darren McKnight, Mike Keenan, and Spencer Nadolsky were named to the All-Academic Team.

Spartans sign heavyweight to National Letter of Intent  4/29/04 - Coach Tom Minkel announced today that the Spartans have signed Illinois heavyweight Freddie DeRamus to a National Letter of Intent.  DeRamus attends St. Rita High School in Chicago and took third in the Illinois AA State Tournament.  He weighs 260 lbs. and completed his senior season with a 41-1 record.  DeRamus was the president of his junior class and is currently the president of St. Rita's Student Council.  DeRamus joins an outstanding group of recruits who signed in November.

Nick Simmons to compete in the 2004 Pan American Championships  4/26/04 - The U.S. rosters have been completed for the 2004 Pan American Championships, which will be held in Guatemala City, Guatemala, May 6-7, and Nick Simmons has been selected to compete at the 55 kg./121 lb. weight class

Andy Simmons receives  the Outstanding Wrestler award for the 2003-04 season  4/19/04 - Freshman Andy Simmons received the Outstanding Wrestler award at the 2004 MSU wrestling team awards banquet held at the Kellogg Center on Sunday.  Andy compiled a 31-11 season record with 5 falls, leading the team in wins.  The Collins-Mikles Leadership Award went to senior Nate Mesyn.

Four Spartans compete at the U.S. National Freestyle Championships  4/10/04 - Nick Simmons led the MSU wrestlers competing at the U.S. National Freestyle Championships with an 8th place finish at 55 kg.  Darren McKnight, Jeff Clemens, and Max Lossen all competed well and won matches in the event.  The U.S. Nationals is the major qualifying event for the Olympic Trials which will be held in Indianapolis on May 21-23.  Nick Simmons and Max Lossen have qualified for the Olympic Trials in freestyle and recent Spartan, John Wechter, has qualified in Greco-Roman.

New instructional video/DVD released by Coach Minkel  3/27/04 - MSU Wrestling coach Tom Minkel has released a new instructional video/DVD "Five Basic Skills For Young Wrestlers" which can be purchased on this web site.  The video is geared for young wrestlers who want to improve their skills.

Three-day crowd at the NCAA Championships is 87,675 The final session of the wrestling championships drew 15,081 fans at Savvis Center. Total attendance for the three days was 87,675. In 2000, the other time the event was at Savvis, it drew a three-day record crowd of 96,944.  Ten different schools brought home championships - Nebraska, Iowa State, Virginia, Harvard, Stanford, Lehigh, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, Minnesota and Ohio State.   Harvard's Jesse Jantzen, the champion at 149, was Most Outstanding Wrestler while Lehigh's Greg Strobel was the Coach of the Year honoree.  Finals results and team finishes.

Mesyn falls to Oklahoma State's Rosholt, 4-1  3/18/04 - Nate Mesyn's run for All-American honors ended with a narrow 4-1 loss to defending national champion, Jake Rosholt, and a 3-0 loss to Blake Kaplan of Ohio State.  Andy Simmons fell to Central Michigan's Jason Mester, 10-1, to end an outstanding freshman year that saw him accumulate 32 wins.  And Darren McKnight lost by fall to Jeff Eckloff of Oklahoma to end his tournament run.

ESPN2 to broadcast the NCAA Finals live  3/17/04 - The finals of the NCAA Wrestling Championships will be broadcast live on ESPN2 Saturday, March 20, at 6:30 p.m. EST.  The show will run for 2 1/2 hours and is the first time that the finals have been broadcast live.

Nate Mesyn advances to the quarter-finals of the NCAA Championships  3/18/04 - Senior Nate Mesyn defeated sixth-seeded Nick Frost of Arizona State 2-0 and then 11th-seeded Nick Catone of Rider 2-0 to advance to the quarterfinals of the 184-pound weight class of NCAA Wrestling Championships in St. Louis.  Nate will face 3rd-seeded Jake Rosholt of Oklahoma State tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. in the quarterfinal match.  At 141-pounds, Andy Simmons defeated Alex Hernandez of N. Carolina State before falling to Dylan Long of N. Iowa.  Andy will wrestle Tommy Owen from Minnesota in the consolation bracket tomorrow.  At 149-pounds Darren McKnight lost his first match to Casey Olsen of Fresno State but came back with a fall over Chris Nissen of Air Force in the consolation bracket.  Darren will face Jeff Ecklof of Oklahoma tomorrow.  Jeff Clemens lost to Rusty Blackmon of Oklahoma State and to Kevin Kessner of Wyoming at 197-pounds and is out of the competition.  Michigan State is in 23rd place in a field of 72 teams.

Spartans head to NCAA Wrestling Championships  3/17/04 - Andy Simmons, Darren McKnight, Nate Mesyn, and Jeff Clemens leave today for the NCAA Champiopnships in St. Louis, MO.  In the first round Simmons, who is seeded 11th, will wrestle Alex Hernandez of N. Carolina State, McKnight will have Casey Olsen of Fresno State,  Mesyn will have Nick Frost of Arizona State, and Jeff Clemens will wrestle Rusty Blackmon of Oklahoma State.

Nate Mesyn leads Spartans with fourth place finish at Big Ten Championships  3/7/04 - Darren McKnight finishes fifth, Jeff Clemens is sixth and Andy Simmons seventh at conference finale.

MSU regroups as five remain alive at the 2004 Big Ten Wrestling Championships  3/6/04 - Andy Simmons, Darren McKnight, Matt McCarty, Nate Mesyn and Jeff Clemens remain as Craig Trombly, Tony Greathouse, Arsen Alexsanyan, Anton Hall and Mike Keenan were eliminated from competition Saturday.

Pre-seeds for the Big Ten Wrestling Championships announced  3/2/04 - PARK RIDGE, IL – The preliminary seeds for the 2004 Big Ten Wrestling Championships were announced today by Conference officials. The pre-seeds are determined by a vote amongst the League’s head wrestling coaches after consideration of regular-season results.  The Championships bracket will be set on Friday, March 5.  MSU's Andy Simmons is pre-seeded #2 at 141 lbs.

College Sports TV and the Big Ten Conference expand their relationship to include CSTV telecasts of 10 Big Ten Championships, including wrestling  2/18/04 - Based on the success of their initial relationship, CSTV: College Sports Television (www.cstv.com), the first 24-hour college sports network, and the Big Ten Conference have extended and expanded their partnership into a multi-year, multi-sport programming and marketing partnership that will feature CSTV televising no fewer than 10 men’s and women’s Big Ten Championships per year, including wrestling. 

Spartans defeat Indiana, 19-14   2/22/04 - Michigan State upended Indiana on Sunday afternoon to register their first Big Ten victory of the season.  On Senior Day at Jenison Field House, the Spartans were led by seniors Mike Keenan, Arsen Alexsanyan, and Nate Mesyn, who all picked up victories in their last dual meet for the Green and White.  Ninth-ranked Andy Simmons also picked up a huge victory by defeating No. 7 Coyte Cooper for his 28th win of the season.

Michigan State closes road trip with 30-8 loss to Ohio State  2/15/04 - Michigan State faced No. 23 Ohio State Sunday in Columbus, Ohio, the site of the 2004 Big Ten Championships.  The Spartans won two individual bouts as Andy Simmons claimed his fourth-straight victory at 141 and Matt McCarty earned his first Big Ten victory at 157 and second Big Ten win this season.

Michigan State falls to #9 Nittany Lions, 29-6   2/13/04 - The Michigan State team wrestling faced a tough, ninth-ranked Penn State team in State College, Pa., Friday.  The Spartans won two individual bouts, including senior Anton Hall's first Big Ten victory of the season at 174 pounds while Andy Simmons picked up his third-straight win at 141.

The Michigan State wrestling team lost a close match, 19-13, to No. 18 Purdue Sunday (Feb. 8) in East Lansing. Andy Simmons, Ryan L'Amoreaux, Matt McCarty, and Craig Trombly all picked up wins for the Spartans.

Spartans fall to yet another Top-10 team  2/6/04 - The Michigan State wrestling team traveled to Oklahoma Friday (Feb. 6), losing a tough decision to the #9 Sooners, 29-6.  Andy Simmons picked up a victory at 141 pounds while Jeff Clemens secured a victory at 197.

Andy Simmons drops match to Dylan Long in the NWCA All-Star Meet  2/2/03 - Spartan freshman Andy Simmons lost his bout with Northern Iowa's Dylan Long Monday night, 8-2, at the NWCA All-Star Meet in Cedar Falls, IA.  Long scored an early takedown with a double leg and then scored two near fall points to lead 4-0.  Simmons escaped in the second period but Long got out of Simmon's legs with a reversal in the third period to win with riding time, 8-2.

Michigan State drops dual to No. 10 Iowa   2/1/04 - Michigan State wrestling fell to No. 10 Iowa Sunday, 31-6, in Iowa City.  The Spartans' tough schedule continues with another road trip to Norman, Okla., to face Oklahoma Friday before returning to Jenison Field House in East Lansing next Sunday

MSU falls to No. 4 Michigan  1/31/04 - Andy Simmons and Nate Mesyn pick up wins in 31-6 team loss to the Wolverines.  The Spartans travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to face the No. 10 Hawkeyes Sunday. Simmons then competes at the NWCA All-Star Classic in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Monday

Andy Simmons to wrestle at the NWCA All-Star Classic  1/29/04 - Andy Simmons, Michigan State's seventh-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds, has been invited to wrestle at the 38th annual National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic on Monday, Feb. 2.  The 2004 NWCA All-Star Classic is hosted by Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, at the UNI-Dome. Simmons will face Northern Iowa's Dylan Long, the 2003 national runner-up at 141 pounds, for the second time this season.

Spartans fall to No. 2 Illinois, 22-10   1/25/04 - Jeff Clemens and Andy Simmons pick up their second straight dual meet victories but the Spartans fall short against the second-ranked Illini.

No. 24 Michigan State Falls To No. 12 Minnesota, 22-16   1/23/04 - Jeff Clemens earns a major decision to lead the Spartans against Golden Gophers.  This marks the second time this season MSU has won five individual matches and not won the dual meet.  MSU returns to action Sunday when they host #2 Illinois.

No. 24 MSU falls to Missouri and Central Michigan at National Duals  1/17/04 - Redshirt freshman Andy Simmons posts the Spartans' only victory against Missouri; MSU drops second dual of season to CMU.

MSU to wrestle Missouri in the first round of the National Duals  1/13/03 - The Spartans will wrestle #2-seed Missouri in the first round of the 2004 National Duals in Cleveland.

The Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals is one of the premier collegiate wrestling events in the country. The event brings together the top-16 teams in NCAA Division I, II and III to compete for the national dual meet championship in their respective division.

The NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals is a dream weekend for all wrestling fans. This year's championships will undoubtedly be special considering the following:
* Seven Division I NCAA Champions are competing in the event.
* 26 Number one ranked wrestlers will be competing in event from all the divisions
* Last year, all ten Division I NCAA Individual Champions competed in the National Duals
* Over 100 duals meets will be wrestled during the course of the event

Spartans down Kent State, 22-15  1/6/04 - No. 25 Michigan State wrestling team opened the new year with a victory over Kent State in Kent, Ohio, Tuesday night.

Andy Simmons places fourth at Midlands, defeats last year's NCAA runnerup  12/30/03 - After losing his first match at the Midlands, freshman Andy Simmons roared back through the consolation bracket to finish fourth at 141 lbs.  On the way he defeated Rob Becker of George Mason University who won the Las Vegas Invitational, 5-0.  He also pinned Dylan Long of N. Spartans have four champions at N. Carolina Open!  12/9/03 - Michigan State put six wrestlers in the finals and came away with four championships at the N. Carolina Open tournament on Saturday in Chapel Hill.  Ten of the fourteen MSU wrestlers who competed placed in the event.  Andy Simmons, Darren McKnight, Anton Hall and Nate Mesyn all won the event while Jeff Clemens and Mike Keenan both lost one point decisions in the finals.  MSU match results

No. 21 MSU Wrestling falls to No. 15 Central Michigan, 19-15  12/2/03 - MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - A heated instate rivalry and a too-close-for-comfort meet characterized the evening as No. 21 Michigan State faced No. 15 Central Michigan at Rose Arena Tuesday night.  Parity was the theme as five matches were decided by three points or less and three bouts were decided by one point or riding time only.

MSU returns to dual meet action against Central Michigan  12/2/03 - No. 21 MSU wrestling squad travels to Central Michigan to face the No. 18 Chippewas, Tuesday, Dec. 2. The dual meet is slated for 7:30 p.m. The Chippewas are 0-2 in dual meet action in 2003.  CMU faced No. 2 Lehigh and No. 4 Michigan to open the dual meet season on November 23.  At 141 pounds and at heavyweight, the Chippewas and the Spartans pit ranked wrestlers against each other. At 141, MSU redshirt freshman No. 16 Andy Simmons will face CMU's senior and fourth-ranked Jason Mester.  At heavyweight, Central Michigan's No. 14 Bill Stouffer will face MSU's No. 17 Mike Keenan.   At 184 pounds 20th-ranked Nate Mesyn rounds out ranked Spartan wrestlers. Mesyn will face Russ Vanderheyden in the 184-pound match.

Michigan State signs five in the early signing period  11/21/03 - Michigan State has signed six top recruits in the early signing period to National Letters of Intent for the 2004-05 season.  Newcomers include Josh Cross (Montrose, Mich./Montrose) [Flint Journal article], John Murphy (Evergreen Park, Ill./St. Rita), Eddie Skowneski (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley), Jeff Wimberley (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Nick Fallico (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South).  “This is a stellar group of recruits,” said head coach Tom Minkel. “We’re excited to have them join the Spartan wrestling program.”

Spartans fall to #1 Oklahoma State, 29-12  11/16/03  11/16/03 - Michigan State had three wrestlers - Andy Simmons (141), Mike Keenan (Hwt.) and Nate Mesyn (184) - pick up wins in State's 29-12 loss to No. 1 Oklahoma State in Jenison Field House Sunday.

Spartans host #1 Oklahoma State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.  11/14/03 - The Michigan State wrestling team will open their dual meet season on Sunday when they host the defending national champions and number one ranked Cowboys of Oklahoma State.  Projected lineups

Seven Spartans place at the Michigan State Open  11/8/03 - Seven Spartans placed at the Michigan State Open wrestling tournament on Sunday.  The tough, two-day event featured over 400 wrestlers from many of the top wrestling teams in the country from as far away as Virginia and Idaho.

Mike Keenan leads Spartans at the EMU Open  11/1/03 - Mike Keenan finished second in the heavyweight class and six other Spartans placed in the top six at the Eastern Michigan Open tournament last weekend in Ypsilanti.  Click the heading for all the individual MSU match results.

New wrestling mats arrive  10/29/03 - The renovation of the MSU wrestling facilities continued yesterday with the arrival of new wrestling mats for the IM West wrestling room.  The team worked long and hard, removing and disposing the bottom layer of mats, and bringing in the three new Resilite mats.

 

Upperclassmen win the 11th annual Steak and Hot Dog soccer game  10/4/03 - In a pouring, freezing rain, the upper classmen of the MSU wrestling team won the annual "Steak and Hot Dog" soccer game over the younger half of the team in overtime 6-5.  The underclassmen were ahead 5-4 with one minute to go when Conan Williams scored a quick goal to tie the game and send it to overtime.  Conan also scored the game winning goal in OT.  The winners of the game ate steak at the Indiana football tailgate . . . and the losers ate hot dogs.

Coach Minkel presented honorary membership in the MSU Varsity Alumni "S" Club  9/26/03 - Spartan wrestling coach Tom Minkel was presented an honorary membership in the MSU Varsity Alumni "S" Club at the end of the third quarter at Saturday's football game against Iowa.  Former MSU wrestler and 1956 NCAA Champion, Jim Sinadinos, was presented the Henry Bullough Award at the same ceremony.

The carpet is in!  The Spartan wrestling locker room nearly done  9/24/03 - The Spartan wrestling team will soon be moving in to their state-of-the-art locker room.  The block "S" was added today as the renovation nears completion.  The locker room is one of the final pieces of Coach Minkel's facility renovation plan that has included the wrestling room, expanded office and storage space, a new video room, and an arena with the nation's only dual meet platform.

They're off and running!  Pre-season strength and conditioning underway  9/22/03 - The 2003-03 Spartan wrestling squad is in the middle of their pre-season strength and conditioning workouts.  The squad lifts weights, runs, plays soccer - and the team favorite - runs the steps in Spartan Stadium.  Regular season wrestling practice begins October 6.

Wrestling locker room renovation nearing completion  9/11/03 - The long-awaited renovation of the MSU wrestling locker room is nearing completion.  The original locker room had deteriorated badly over the years.  Greg Bria of OakWood Sports, Inc. is installing the new custom oak lockers for the Spartan wrestlers.  The $75,000 renovation was financed in large part by MSU wrestling supporters who will be recognized at an early season dual meet.  The project should be completed in several weeks.
