Spartans announce 2005-06 wrestling schedule 6/24/05 - Coach Tom Minkel has released the 2005-06 MSU wrestling schedule and once again it features competition against the very best teams in the nation. The Spartans will open the home dual meet season against two-time defending national champions Oklahoma State and close the season at the University of Oklahoma who finished third at the NCAA Championships. MSU will have seven home dual meets highlighted by Big Ten matches against wrestling powerhouses Iowa and Minnesota. Two teams are on the schedule for the first time, the University of Pittsburgh and Edinboro University. Nick Simmons named Michigan State Male Athlete of the Year 6/23/05 - Six Michigan State University student-athletes have been recognized for excellence both on the playing field and in the classroom as they have earned the school's highest athletic awards for 2004-05. Sophomore wrestler Nick Simmons was named the George Alderton Male Athlete of the Year, while senior basketball player Kristin Haynie picked up the George Alderton Female Athlete of the Year accolades. Simmons completed his sophomore season with a 32-4 record on the mat and claimed the 2005 Big Ten Championship at 125 pounds. In addition, he earned All-America honors for the second time in his career at the NCAA Championships. Haynie, a senior guard, became the first Spartan to be drafted in the first round of the WNBA draft (No. 9 overall to Sacramento Monarchs).
The broadcast crew for the World Team Trials is veteran play-by-play announcer Van Stokes, former Iowa State coach Jim Gibbons who provides color commentary, and wrestling broadcaster Joe Miller, who handles both color commentary and interviews. The length of the broadcast will be between two and three hours long, and will be determined during production after the event. The production plan for the show is to air 13 championship matches in their entirety, with action in all three styles. The matches that will be shown will be the final bout of the best-of-three Championship Series, the deciding match that determines which athlete wins the spot on the U.S. World Team. Nick Simmons wins the University World Team Trials - will represent the U.S. in the World University Games in Turkey 5/28/05 - The U.S. World Team members on the University level were determined in their respected trials event at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., May 28. The University World Team Trials were competed in a format similar to the U.S. World Team Trials. A challenge tournament was held on Friday, May 27, which determined who got to compete in a best-of-three Championship Series against the 2005 University Nationals champion. A best of three Championship Series in each weight class, in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, was held with the winner earning the team position. The 2005 University World Team Trials determined who will represent the U.S. at the World University Games in Izmir, Turkey, August 1-7. S Spartan sophomore Nick Simmons, the defending University Nationals Champion at 55 kg., defeated challenger Adam Smith from Penn State in two consecutive matches to earn a spot on the University World Team. Andy Simmons also competed in the Trials finishing second in the challenge tournament to Jesse Jantzen from Harvard. Jantzen was the 2004 NCAA Champion at 149 lbs. Former Spartan John Wechter finished second in the Greco-Roman competition. Assistant Coach Dave Dean to leave MSU for new position 5/25/05 - Long time Head Assistant Coach Dave Dean has accepted the position of Director of Security and Student Affairs for Lowell schools in Lowell, Michigan. Dave will also be the head wrestling coach for Lowell High School. Dave is a graduate of the University of Minnesota where he was a two-time Big Ten Champion and two-time NCAA All-American. Dave joined coach Minkel in 1992 and has played an integral role in the rebuilding of the MSU wrestling program. Dave will begin his new position in early August. Roger Chandler has been promoted to Head Assistant Coach and a search has begin shortly to fill the position of Second Assistant Coach. McKnight named an NWCA Academic All-American 5/15/05 - Junior wrestler Darren McKnight as been named an Academic All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. The Hixon, Tenn., native boasts a 3.34 GPA in accounting. Former Spartan All-American Dan Wirnsberger named the head wrestling coach at Bucknell University 5/15/05 - Dan Wirnsberger, a three-time All-American at Michigan State and the head coach at Bloomsburg University since 2002, will take over the reins of a year-long transition process that will culminate with the Bucknell wrestling program’s official return to varsity status when classes begin in August, 2005. Nick Simmons places third at the U.S. National Freestyle Championships 4/30/05 - Spartan sophomore Nick Simmons finished third at the 55 kg. weight class at the U.S. National Freestyle Championships in Las Vegas on Saturday. Nick's finish qualifies him to compete in the U.S. World Team Trials on June 17 in Ames, IA. Nick won the University National Championships earlier in May and is the number one seed at the University World Team Trials to be held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs on May 22. Spartans sign two major recruits including number one-ranked Franklin Gomez - 4/25/05 Tom Minkel announced today the signing of two major wrestling recruits to National Letter of Intent including High School National Champion Franklin Gomez. Wrestlers win the second annual Student-Athlete Lip Sync Contest (SPYN Awards) 4/22/05 - The Spartan wrestling team, in an awesome display of theatrical talent, won the second annual Student-Athlete Lip Sync Contest (now known as the SPYN Awards) at Jenison Fieldhouse on Wednesday. The proceeds from the event will go to the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) and the student-athletes will be presenting a check for the amount raised at the CMN Telethon in June. Nick Simmons garners Outstanding Wrestler honors at University Nationals 4/18/05 - EVANSTON, Ill.- Sophomore Nick Simmons swept through the 55-kg weight class April 15-16 at Welsh-Ryan Arena, pinning four of his five opponents and earning the outstanding wrestler award for the 2005 Freestyle University National Championships. 3/2/05 - Junior R.J. Boudro earned his first career
Big Ten Wrestler of the Week award after dominating in an 18-5
victory over Oklahoma’s Brad Martens, Feb. 25. Boudro was
leading 2-0 going into the third period, when he went on a tear,
recording six takedowns and three near-fall points. The 18-point
performance is the most points by Boudro since he scored 24 in a
technical fall over Eastern Michigan's Ben Best on Nov. 30. The Spartan wrestlers returned to campus and the dual meet with the Cowboys of Oklahoma State has been re-scheduled for Thursday, January 13 at 7:00 p.m. CST in Stillwater, OK.

Three Spartans reach Midlands semi-finals, MSU in fifth place 12/29/04 - Nick and Andy Simmons and R.J Boudro all reached the semi-finals of the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Illinois today. Darren McKnight and Joe Williams lwere defeated in the quarter-finals and will wrestle in the consolation rounds tomorrow. MSU is in fifth place in the team standings behind Central Michigan, Iowa State, Illinois, and Iowa in the field of 59 teams. Spartans ready for Midlands Championships 12/27/04 - The Midlands seeding committee has seeded four Spartan wrestlers for the Midlands Championships on Wednesday and Thursday. Nick and Andy Simmons are the highest seeds with #2 seeds at 125 lbs. and 141 lbs. No. 17 Spartans top Cleveland State, 26-15 12/11/04 - The No. 17-ranked Michigan State wrestling team needed a rally from its lower weight classes to defeat the Cleveland State Vikings, 26-15, Saturday, Dec. 11 at Woodling Gymnasium in Cleveland. Huge pins from Nick Simmons (125 lbs.) and Ryan Froese (133 lbs.) as well as victories from Joe Williams (184 lbs.), Jeff Clemens (197 lbs.), Andy Simmons (141 lbs.) and Darren McKnight (149 lbs.) propelled the Spartans to the dual meet win.

Sophomore Andy Simmons 141 pounds, redshirt freshman Joe Williams at 184 lbs., and freshman Jeff Wimberley at 125 lbs. all took home tournament titles with perfect 4-0 records.

Nick Simmons invited to compete in the NWCA All-Star Meet, will face Oklahoma's #1-ranked Sam Hazewinkle 10/30/04 - MSU sophomore Nick Simmons has been selected to compete in the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star meet on Monday, November 22 at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. He will face Oklahoma's Sam Hazewinkle in the 125 lb. match. Hazewinkle finished 3rd in the NCAA Championships last year and is presently ranked #1 in the weight class. John Kimble joins the Spartan staff 10/10/04 - Former North Carolina-Greensboro heavyweight, John Kimble, has joined the MSU coaching staff as the volunteer coach. Kimble is a native of Carmel, Indiana where he helped Carmel H.S. to back-to-back undefeated seasons as a junior and senior and was also All-Conference and All-State on the football team. Kimble wrestled at UNC-G from 1999 to 2004 where was a Southern Conference Champion and NCAA qualifier. Spartans begin regular season practice on Thursday 10/3/04 - The Michigan State wrestling team wraps up their pre-season strength and conditioning workouts this week and will begin regular season wrestling practices on Thursday. Many of the Spartans will get their first competition when they wrestle unattached at the Eastern Michigan Open tournament in Ypsilanti on Saturday, Nov. 6. Spartans announce captains for 2004-05 season 9/17/04 - Michigan State has announced that Darren McKnight, Nick Simmons, and Andy Simmons will be the team captains for the upcoming season. Darren McKnight is a junior and returning NCAA qualifier at 149 lbs. Nick Simmons returns to the squad after taking an Olympic redshirt year last year. Nick, who will have sophomore eligibility, placed 5th in the Olympic Team Trials, one of the top finishes of any collegian at the Trials. Nick will wrestle at 125 lbs. Andy Simmons is a sophomore and returning NCAA Qualifier at 141 lbs.
