MICHIGAN OPEN Spartan wrestling team cracks Top 20 in three preseason polls 10/12/06 - EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team is well represented in several preseason team and individual rankings. As a team, the Spartans are ranked as high as 14th by The Wrestling Mall. MSU is ranked 16th by Wrestling International Newsmagazine (W.I.N.) and 18th by Amateur Wrestling News. Andy Simmons, who placed fifth at the NCAA Championships last spring at 141 pounds en route to earning All-America honors for the second consecutive year, debuts his senior year at No. 1 by Amateur Wrestling News and No. 2 by W.I.N. Magazine. Season outlook bright for 2006-07 Spartans 10/10/06 - Head coach Tom Minkel sees his 2006-07 squad as the perfect blend of veterans and young talent. While heralded red-shirt freshmen Franklin Gomez and Rocky Cozart will get plenty of attention in their first year of competition, much of the focus will be on the senior seasons of returning All-Americans Nick and Andy Simmons. “There is a certain symmetry to the entire thing,” Minkel said. “They grew up just down the road in Williamston, went to high school at Williamston High School, and had extremely successful careers here. To finish their careers here at the Breslin Center with the 2007 Big Ten Championships, and at the Palace of Auburn Hills with the NCAA Championships is very special.” Rashad Evans stops Jason Lambert in two rounds 9/23/06 - Rashad Evans moved from prospect to contender with the most impressive victory of his UFC career as he stopped Jason Lambert in the second round of their light heavyweight bout, expected to be one of the most evenly matched bouts on the UFC 63 card, but which turned out to be anything but. Evans (14-0), winner of the heavyweight division of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’s second season, dominated the first round with perhaps the best five minutes of his UFC career, as he used takedowns, ground and pound, and quick standup strikes to jump out in front early. The only break in the one-sided frame was a mid round kimura attempt by Lambert (22-6) which Evans escaped after a few dicey moments. The second round produced more of the same, and after yet another takedown by the former Michigan State wrestler, it was lights out for Lambert as Evans rained punch after punch down on him until referee John McCarthy halted the bout at the 2:22 mark. Spartans begin pre-season conditioning workouts 9/8/06 - Classes have started, football season is here, and the Michigan State wrestling team has begun its pre-season conditioning workouts. Spartans announce 2006-07 wrestling schedule 8/16/06 - Coach Tom Minkel has released the 2006-07 MSU wrestling schedule and once again it features competition against many of the very best teams in the nation. MSU wrestling fans will see more wrestling at home than ever before - the MSU Open, eight home dual meets, the Big Ten Championships at the Breslin Center, and the NCAA Championships in Auburn Hills.
