Spartan wrestling team cracks Top 20 in three preseason polls  10/12/06 - EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team is well represented in several preseason team and individual rankings. As a team, the Spartans are ranked as high as 14th by The Wrestling Mall. MSU is ranked 16th by Wrestling International Newsmagazine (W.I.N.) and 18th by Amateur Wrestling News.  Andy Simmons, who placed fifth at the NCAA Championships last spring at 141 pounds en route to earning All-America honors for the second consecutive year, debuts his senior year at No. 1 by Amateur Wrestling News and No. 2 by W.I.N. Magazine.

Season outlook bright for 2006-07 Spartans  10/10/06 - Head coach Tom Minkel sees his 2006-07 squad as the perfect blend of veterans and young talent.  While heralded red-shirt freshmen Franklin Gomez and Rocky Cozart will get plenty of attention in their first year of competition, much of the focus will be on the senior seasons of returning All-Americans Nick and Andy Simmons.  “There is a certain symmetry to the entire thing,” Minkel said. “They grew up just down the road in Williamston, went to high school at Williamston High School, and had extremely successful careers here.  To finish their careers here at the Breslin Center with the 2007 Big Ten Championships, and at the Palace of Auburn Hills with the NCAA Championships is very special.”

Rashad Evans stops Jason Lambert in two rounds  9/23/06 - Rashad Evans moved from prospect to contender with the most impressive victory of his UFC career as he stopped Jason Lambert in the second round of their light heavyweight bout, expected to be one of the most evenly matched bouts on the UFC 63 card, but which turned out to be anything but.

Evans (14-0), winner of the heavyweight division of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’s second season, dominated the first round with perhaps the best five minutes of his UFC career, as he used takedowns, ground and pound, and quick standup strikes to jump out in front early. The only break in the one-sided frame was a mid round kimura attempt by Lambert (22-6) which Evans escaped after a few dicey moments.

The second round produced more of the same, and after yet another takedown by the former Michigan State wrestler, it was lights out for Lambert as Evans rained punch after punch down on him until referee John McCarthy halted the bout at the 2:22 mark.

Rashad Evans to fight again on SpikeTV  6/15/06  - The battle to get into title contention in the UFC is a tough one, filled with peaks, valleys and formidable obstacles along the way. On Wednesday, June 28th, at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, Spartan volunteer coach, Rasahd Evans, will look to move up the ladder on Spike TV’s Ultimate Fight Night.

Ultimate Fight Night, which is headlined by a middleweight showdown between Chris Leben and Anderson Silva will also features a light heavyweight bout between Stephan Bonnar and Rashad Evans.  The event will air live on Spike TV at 8:00 p.m. EST.

In a light heavyweight clash, Branden Lee Hinkle will make his 205-pound debut in the UFC against Jason Lambert, who is unbeaten in the Octagon at 2-0.

Three welterweight fights also pack this stellar card, with Josh Koscheck facing former UFC middleweight champ Dave Menne, Koscheck’s AKA teammate Jon Fitch taking on American Top Team’s Thiago Alves, and TUF2 finalist Luke Cummo looking to build on his win over Jason Von Flue as he battles Canada’s Jonathan Goulet.

Franklin Gomez falls short at the FILA Junior World Team Trials  6/12/06 - MSU's stellar freshman, Franklin Gomez, lost his bid to make the U.S. FILA Junior World Team on Saturday falling to Henry Cejudo of the Sunkist Wrestling Club in the best-of-3 finals in Colorado Springs, CO.  Cejudo swept the two matches by scores of 1-0, 3-1 and 2-0, 4-0, but Gomez made Cejudo work for every point.  Gomez shot in to take a 1-0 lead on a leg attack in the second period of the first match.  But Cejudo, fifth at the Junior World meet last year, quickly regrouped to take control.

Gomez, a redshirt at Michigan State, was a Junior National champion in freestyle and Greco-Roman last year. He was a FILA Junior National champion this year.

Cejudo, the reigning U.S. Nationals champion, was competing for the third straight weekend.  He was second at the U.S. World Team Trials two weeks ago and won the Pan American Championships last weekend in Brazil.  He is headed to Russia for a tournament next weekend.

The 19-year-old Cejudo has won two straight events after falling to World champion and Olympic silver medalist Sammie Henson in the finals of the U.S. World Team Trials late last month.
